BIOREMEDIATION USING OSE II

CMTA is the licence holder of an enzymatic bioremediation product called Oil Spill Eater II (OSE II).

Enzymatic bioremediation is a form of clean up, in which enhanced indigenous microorganisms chemically alter and breakdown organic molecules into other substances, carbon dioxide (CO2) and water, in order to obtain energy and nutrients.

Enhanced bioremediation, by enzyme additive significantly accelerates the natural biodegradation processes by applying specially chosen enzymes and nutrients to the spilled substance or contaminant.

Reasons OSE II is the better alternative to traditional methods for cleaning soil, water and treating waste:

  • Permanent removal of the contaminants from the environment without creating secondary clean up problems.
  • It is able to be used in sensitive environments as it is non-hazardous.
  • Minimal or no effect on the ecology and it does not introduce foreign species or bacteria to the site.
  • OSE II returns the environment to pre-spill conditions. There is potential to reclaim land.
  • For a fresh spill, OSE II eliminates hazard of fire and explosion during first response. OSE II converts hydrocarbons to a non-flammable product within three minutes.

OSE II for clean ups and waste treatment

Innovation, efficiency and environmental friendliness are at the core of the process we will use to clean-up spills, contaminated soil and treat waste.

OSE II remediates hydrocarbon contaminated soil, water and waste at the sources without the need to separate or segregate. The toxins and contaminants are removed from the environment, not transferred.

As OSE II is non-hazardous and can be applied in a variety of ways OSE II can be effectively used on:

  • Soil (surface and subsurface), sand, rocks
  • On surface and sub surface of open/moving water (fresh, salt and brackish)
  • On the ocean floor
  • Marshes / estuaries
  • Shoreline
  • On solid man-made surfaces

CMTA develop the methodology, project timeline, project management documentation (environmental, OHS and quality), determine equipment and resource requirements, and manage the clean up including monitoring bioremediation and the results achieved.

Our Methodologies are developed with a focus on human safety, achieving quality results and maximising the efficiency of bioremediation including:

  • Customised equipment not requiring humans to drive and operate, removing a majority of human factor risks.
  • Using automated equipment. There is no need for human interaction keeping people out of the area where heavy equipment is in operation.
  • Real time monitoring and data collection to track progress.

OSE II for emergency response

In the event of an accident or emergency, significant and uncontrolled volumes of hydrocarbon can enter the environment causing pollution and fire / explosion hazards. Each 205L drum of OSE II will clean up over 10,000L (65 barrels) of oil and remediate it to CO2 and water.

In a spill or emergency, OSE II can be used as the ‘first response’. OSE II:

  • Diminishes the toxicity of the spill rapidly.
  • Renders odour almost non-existent.
  • Prevents the oil or spill from adhering to anything.
  • The spill is caused to float and is prevented from sinking.
  • Prevents the need to apply copious volumes of water or fire suppressant, as it eliminates the fire hazard and can treat the spill at the source.

In Australia, there is a National Plan to Combat the Pollution of the Sea by Oil and Other Noxious and Hazardous Substances. Only those Oil Spill Control Agents (OSCA) listed on the National Plan Register of Oil Spill Control Agents (‘OSCA Register’) will be employed to combat oil pollution incidents. OSE II has been reviewed and is listed on the OSCA Register. View AMSA Website

NATURALLY OCCURRING RADIOACTIVE MATERIAL MANAGEMENT

CMTA (trading as Lothway TBS in Australia) NORM handling unit – hazardous waste handling vessel

Example of drums of NORM (source: Managing Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM) in the oil and gas industry, International Association of Oil & Gas Producers, 2016)
In general, Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM) contain radionuclides found in nature, such as radium, thorium, or uranium. When oil and gas are mobilised from below the surface of the planet, the change in pressure and temperature causes the radioactive materials to come out of solution. These solid NORMs can then concentrate on production equipment, which could lead to potentially hazardous exposure situations.

After 20-years hands on experience working across 19 oil platforms for ExxonMobil in the Bass Strait in Australia, CMTA personnel have expertise in handling and managing NORM.

In consultation with radiation experts, CMTA develop methodologies and work in accordance to safe work permit requirements to handle NORM.

NORM Management Objectives

CMTA’s objectives in relation to NORM management is to provide technical solutions and services to ensure effective, safe and compliant radioactive waste management.

The objectives will be achieved through:

  • Identifying the status of NORM waste sources and understanding the content, storage status;
  • Determining equipment and resource requirements with personal safety and safety in the treatment area the key priority;
  • Developing a methodology, project timeline, project management documentation (environmental, OHS and quality); and
  • Managing the NORM handing / treatment process including monitoring progress and reporting on the results achieved.

NORM Management Experience

CMTA’s experience includes:

  • De-sanding production vessels such as separators, scrubbers and spool.
  • Transferring NORM from skip into holding tanks.
  • Vessel cleaning and NORM handling, including flushing sands and sludge from vessels using water under high pressure and cleaning up with vacuum skips.
  • Cleaning drilling and other contaminated equipment.
  • Handling and treating bulk storage of NORM waste.

Safe Execution of NORM Work

All NORM work requires careful planning to ensure that occupational exposures are minimised. All occupational exposures will comply with internationally recognised standards as recommended by the International Commission for Radiological Protection.

Methodologies will be developed to reflect best practice to ensure the safety of all workers.

BIO AIR GAS PHASE AIR CLEANING (GPAC)

Envirorisk Management holds the international distribution rights to Bio Air’s Gas Phase Air Cleaning – GPAC technology."

Invented in Australia, GPAC is breakthrough technology designed to remove over 90% of odour and pollutants, resulting in optimum indoor air quality.

The GPAC unit is ducted into the air conditioning system to draw out air that is returning from the occupied space to the air conditioning unit. The GPAC unit strips the air of odours and gaseous contaminants by trapping them within the GPAC media reservoir. The clean air is then returned to the building’s internal spaces.

GPAC was invented by Paul Spry, who was the Chairman of the Committee that wrote the Australian Standards for Air conditioning / Ventilation. It has been invented by an industry expert to address the deficiency of definitive odour removal technology available in the market.

Current GPAC installations include the Research School of Earth Sciences at Australian National University Canberra and Family Law Court / Administration Appeals Tribunal Sydney.

GPAC is the superior alternative to traditional Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems delivering:

  • Substantial financial savings.
  • Unrivalled indoor air Quality.
  • 35% reduction on initial capital expenditure on HVAC plant size.
  • A minimum of 90.84% removal of odours and pollutants (Ref. Endorsement Graham Bell PhD,FRSN. CEO, E-NOSE PTY LTD).
  • Large energy savings retrofitting GPAC units in locations that experience extreme climates.
  • Carbon footprint and greenhouse gas emission reduction.
  • GPAC can enable higher occupancy densities without requiring increased outdoor air supply.

GPAC is a proven technology which has been rigorously tested. The construction of the test facilities, and the testing, was funded by the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) Government. Testing and other information can be made available for review and discussion.
